 The Forgotten Prisoners

Timothy O'Sullivan

The execution of four Republican soldiers at Drumboe Woods, Stranorlar,County Donegal. The four gallant soldiers were Charlie Daly 26,Daniel Enright 23,Timothy o'Sullivan 23 all from Kerry and Sean Larkin 26 from Derry. After the signing of the Treaty these men and their comrades came to Donegal to continue the fight for freedom and a 32 County Republic. In the Autumn of 1922 the free state Government initiated their policy of official executions by establishing a three man Army Council,Military Courts, under the provision of Emergency Powers.Shortly afterwards the four men were captured at Dunlewey in November 1922 and were tried by one such Military Court on 18th January 1923 and were sentenced to death. They were subsequently executed by a Free State fireing squad on March 14th 1923 on the order of General Joe Sweeney.

The people of Donegal have never forgotten the sacrifice that was made by these young men.Every year at Easter time, the main Easter Commemoration is held at the memorial in Drumboe Woods at the exact spot where the men were executed.
